Haryana, Delhi sign power sharing agreement

Chandigarh, Dec 5 (IANS) Power generation agencies of Haryana and Delhi Friday signed an agreement to develop a coal mine in Madhya Pradesh to meet the respective electricity requirements of the two states.

The Haryana Power Generation Corp and Indraprastha Power Generation Corp of Delhi signed the agreement for the formation of a joint venture, Yamuna Coal Co, for developing a coal block at Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh.

'The coal block will go a long way to meet the power generation requirements of Haryana and Delhi,' Haryana's financial commissioner and secretary Ashok Lavasa said here.

Lavasa said the development work at the coal block will be completed within four years.

The coal ministry recently allocated the coal block, spread over nearly 53 sq. km., to Haryana and the Delhi government. The block has an estimated reserve of 950 million tonnes of coal, which would be enough to generate about 5,000 MW of power for 25 years if fully exploited, Lavasa said.

The joint venture company, to be headquartered at Faridabad in Haryana and adjoining the national capital, will also set up a 2,000-MW power plant at the pithead to avoid transportation of coal for power generation.

The power generated at this plant will be equally shared by Haryana and Delhi.
