Karunanidhi calls for ceasefire in Sri Lanka

National,Politics, Sun, 16 Nov 2008 IANS

Chennai, Nov 16 (IANS) Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi Sunday again called for a ceasefire in Sri Lanka, saying the military in the island nation was killing 'innocent Tamils' in the name of fighting terrorism.

'The raining bombs meant to hit only terrorists in northern Sri Lanka end up killing the innocent Tamil minority. That is why we are demanding a ceasefire,' he told reporters in Coimbatore, 500 km southwest of here.

'Only an immediate and total ceasefire in the northern part of the island will satisfy the (50 million plus) Tamils in India,' Karunanidhi added.

Speaking at the conclusion a well-attended public hunger-strike led by Tamil movie icon Vijay in the evening, Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary D. Pandian said: 'The second all-party meeting to be held tomorrow (Monday) will decide whether those regimes that have refused to act to save innocent Tamils in Sri Lanka should continue in power.'

Actor Vijay was optimistic of a quick solution to the issue.

'The sentiments expressed here hopefully should cause the Sri Lankan government to think of solving the problem and allowing Tamils there to live in peace,' Vijay said.

The day-long hunger-strike was held in over 35 centres in the state, a press statement of the matinee idol's fan club federation said.
