New Delhi, Nov 13 (IANS) Policeman-turned-activist-turned-politician Amod Kumar Kanth feels that his erstwhile colleague Kiran Bedi too should enter politics.
'Educated people must enter politics and (take the) lead in bringing change. Kiran Bedi too should enter politics,' Amod Kanth, 61, told IANS here.
The first Indian Police Service (IPS) woman officer and a Magsaysay Award winner, Kiran Bedi took voluntary retirement last year after she was overlooked for the post of Delhi Police Commissioner.
A highly regarded police officer, Kiran Bedi has worked in several fields including drug de-addiction and jail reforms. She has in the past said that she does not want to embrace politics.
Amod Kanth, who like Kiran Bedi served for many years in Delhi, said it was better to join a mainstream political party than contest as an independent if one was serious about bettering the lives of the people.
'In political life, you can achieve your vision only through the backing of a political party. I think top government officials and bureaucrats can be real success stories in politics. Why not Kiran Bedi?
'They know the administration, government machinery and are aware of many ground realities. They should bring their creativity into politics,' said the retired IPS officer.
Amod Kanth is contesting the coming Delhi assembly elections as the Congress candidate from south Delhi's Sangam Vihar area, the largest slum cluster in the Indian capital. Delhi goes to polls Nov 29.
