Bomb blast again rocks Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is struck with terror after a recent explosion in a passenger packed train bounding for Pandura in Colombo Suburb of Dehiwala. The blast occured on May 26 at around 04:50 pm. At least eight people have reportedly been killed including a pregnant woman and about 73 civilians are injured. The death number is supposed to rise according to the Defence ministry.

The civilians were provided with immediate aid from the military as well as the nearby residents. The injured were immediately rescued from the affected area and rushed to hospital in ambulances for treatment.

The incident was followed by another blast in which a Tamil Tiger rebel suicide bomber smashed a police bus with his motorbike killing about 20 people. Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara blamed the Tamil Tiger Separatists for the latest blast targeting public transport. Though the rebel party is constantly denying any alleged involvement in the blast. It is reported that the military diffused two bombs found on buses during the weekend.

Amidst these scattered violent activities, the do-or-die battle between the LTTE and the military have been going on in the North of Sri Lanka with military is determined to squash the rebels by the end of 2008. Just a day after when 21 rebels and one soldier killed in battle, the Air Force helicopters laid onslaught on LTTE's temporary base.

The Tamil Tigers feel they have been marginalised by the successive governments controlled by the majority Sinhalese. Thus they are fighting a war since 1983 for the acquisition of an independent homeland for the Ethnic minority Tamils. In this 25 year long civil war, almost 70,000 people have been killed and the bloody violence is still at its peak. According to the military data around 400 rebels have been killed in May and 45 soldiers lost their lives.
