June 11: A new diagnostic technique has enhanced the chances of Alzheimer detection and has delighted scientists and specialists as new ways and measures of treatment are found. According to a research, the total number of people surviving Alzheimer can multiply up to four times in a short period of time.

This new research tool helps in the early detection of symptoms and the disease. The latest piece of technology observes data and predicts with 85 per cent accuracy. Latest reports reveal that till 2050 there will be more than 106 million Alzheimer patients. The patients suffering from this fatal and horrible disease lose physical and mental control over themselves in the advance stage while the primary characteristics of disease begin from memory loss. The current numbers of Alzheimer patient is estimated as 26 millions, according to Alzheimer Society.

“One among the 85 persons will suffer from this neuro-mental disease”, claiming this fact Ron Brookmeyer of Johns Hopkins University told in an Alzheimer’s society meeting in Washington on the basis of his latest research. He further told that, “However, if we can make even modest advances in preventing Alzheimer's disease or delay its progression, we could have a huge global public health impact. We face a looming global epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease as the world’s population ages.” Asia is a highly sensitive zone with approximately 62.85 million patients covering 59 percent of all cases till 2050.

A new technique has been used for this research in which the complete medical history along with a combo of PET and MRI techniques with blood test has been applied. Positron Emission Tomography, PET is a scanning technology that is used to detect the measure of blood flow in real time, while Magnetic Resonance Image, MRI is a magnetic imaging technique that clearly shows the shapes and size of physical structures of the body.

It is often difficult to detect this disease at the early stage, as the symptoms of this disease appears occasionally and when it reaches the advance stage, it is even harder to detect and differentiate from other neuro-psychic diseases. There is no complete treatment procedure as such. Even medicine available to cure it are few, only four medicines are in the market which helps in partial treatment at early stage.

“There is no cure for Alzheimer's although there is hope that stem cell research may unlock the secrets of the disease and possibly lead to a cure. Drug treatments have also been developed that can slow progression of symptoms in some people,” quoted Davatzikos, a researcher.

A set of 96 genes have been detected by Oslo based Anders Lonneborg and colleagues of DiaGenic, a biotech company. These genes look something different from the other genes in the blood samples of Alzheimer’s patient. This study was conducted over more than 100 elderly people.
