Scarlett's case goes to CBI's hand

Reluctant to handover Scarlett Keeling case to country’s premiere investigating agency Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Goa government has once for all decided to transfer the case to CBI on Wednesday.

Earlier Chief Minister Digamber Kamat had indicated his government’s willingness to handover the case to the investigating body following heaps of negative publicity.

After all the negative attention from media and public, National Commission for Women (NCW) too gave Goa government a big jolt and accused Goa police of misleading the authorities and public with their investigation.

Nirmala Venkatesha, an NCW member said, “Police are trying to hide the facts of the case and close it. We will never allow this to happen.”

“She (Keeling) was raped by four to five persons by gagging her mouth. There are nail marks on the body, which indicate that more than one person was involved in sexually assaulting her,” she added.

The report might have increased the woes of state administration, which has been lashed both by media as well as international communities.

But this decision is a welcome move for many who remain unsatisfied with results of investigation carried by state agencies. The case investigation looked smoky after various discrepancies were found in the two subsequent autopsy reports. The second report contradicted first one which said that Scarlett died due to drowning by murder and rape.

Scarlett’s mother Fiona too had tough time after she was accused of being careless mother but persisted on to bring justice to the injustice meted out by her 15 year old daughter.

Unsatisfied with the autopsies and the investigation she asked for Centre’s intervention in the case and flew with Scarlett’s body to London to get the third autopsy in UK. Fiona has openly criticised Goa ministers and the police and their alleged nexus with drug mafias.

The Goa government again raised dust after dismantling the Bar where the murder allegedly took place, this act of Goa police has been taken harshly, both by Fiona and the NCW members who saw it as a clear attempt to destroy evidence and hamper future investigations.

Scarlett was found dead on Goa`s popular Anjuna beach on February 18 near Lui’s Bar. The men have been charged in the case including Samson D'Souza, has been charged with rape and Placido Carvalho is being questioned on suspicion of involvement in her rape and murder. Meanwhile, Fiona will return back to India to fight her daughter’s case.
