New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) The star of the second day in Indian Open golf is Guido Van Der Valk with a superb 61 to be tied sixth and he says he likes to play on the Asian Tour.
Born on the Indian Republic Day, Jan 26 in 1980, the Dutch golfer turned professional in 2002, but has had very moderate success on the European Challenge Tour and the Asian Tour in the past few years.
'I like the Asian Tour, but I missed it last season and got back to the Qualifying School. So it's nice to be playing well this year. The people here are so friendly, it's comforting. It's like the friends tour or something.'
'I shot a five over on the opening day and I was telling myself to shoot a five under today to be even-par and make the cut. So I wasn't expecting the kind of score which is a pleasant surprise.'
Van Der Valk recorded his best performance in his golfing career thanks to an eagle and nine birdies.
Elated at his round, he said, 'I was hitting it close and I found the fairways today. But it can be costly out there. Just like yesterday, I found the rough twice, which cost me two double bogeys. I can't afford to miss the fairways here.'
'I am playing for the first time on this course and I am enjoying myself. I think the conditions were much cooler today. This is my best score ever as my previous best was a 10 under which I did during my amateur days.
Van Der Valk, after turning pro played in European Challenge Tour for two years. He once won on Dutch Tour and was second at the Russian Open in 2002.
He came to Asia in 2005, when he finished 85th in Order of Merit. In 2006, he went back to Europe and then after another less-than-happy season, he was back in Asia in 2007, when he finished 61st and missed keeping his card by just $455. His best was 13th at Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open and 19th at Barclay's Singapore Open.
Coming back to Q-School, he was 28th and is hoping to keep his card this time.
