Sydney, Jan 1(ANI): Australian cricket legend Ian Chappell has reckoned that his team's pace bowlers will be crucial in laying the groundwork for defeating India in the upcoming Sydney Test.
He dubbed the trio- James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus as an incentive for the Australian team.
Ian said veteran batsman Ricky Ponting is still productive and added that he is an asset especially when young batsmen fail to deliver upto to the mark.
Ian said a consistent performance with the bat would complement the efforts for Australia's victory against India.
"Armed with the knowledge that India's much-vaunted batting line-up can be held in check, they now know that consistency with the bat is what's required to complete a winning formula," telegraph.com.au quoted Ian, as saying.
"This knowledge should relax them so they stop pressing and just play naturally without fear of reprisal. There were signs in Melbourne that the Australian pace bowlers' success against the talented Indian batting line-up might be more than a one-off triumph," he added.
Ian, however, said tackling Indian batsman Virender Sehwag would be crucial to prevent India from setting up a formidable score though he admitted that Australians have failed to come up with a concrete plan to challenge Tendulkar.
"If Australia can shut down both Sehwag and Tendulkar, then India could well be propelled on a downhill slide similar to their recent precipitous one in England, which ended in a 4-0 series thrashing," Ian said. (ANI)
