New Delhi, Sun, 18 Dec 2011 ANI

New Delhi, Dec 18 (ANI): Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Ajit Singh, who joined hands with the ruling Congress Party ahead of the Uttar Pradesh polls, on Sunday hit out at Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati saying the people of the state will now have a clear-cut alternative.

"I want to thank everyone. This will have an impact in Uttar Pradesh, as the people of the state who are now fed up of Mayawati (Bahujan Samaj Party Government) will now have a clear-cut alternative. The (political) wave that will begin from Uttar Pradesh will have a lasting effect on the whole country," Ajit Singh told the media here after being inducted into the UPA Cabinet.

Meanwhile, RLD General Secretary and Ajit Singh's son Jayant Chaudhary echoing similar sentiments said if any political outfit succeeds in ushering development in Uttar Pradesh it would have a huge impact all over the country.

"Well, in politics you are constantly engaged with people, they are constantly assessing, re-assessing. So, that is the world we live in, so we have to cope. And I think 2012 is a big challenge, primarily because Uttar Pradesh is the largest state of our country. It has traditionally been where politics our country has taken directions from," said Chaudhary.

"People have the expectations, they are looking at the result. And I see it as an important election primarily because the kind of leadership we have had in Uttar Pradesh for several years. If you are able to come out with a new model or development in that state then it will have a huge impact all over the country because lot of learning can happen in that process," he added.

Ajit Singh was earlier this morning inducted into the Union Cabinet in a bid by the ruling Congress Party to strengthen itself ahead of the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls where it has tied up with the RLD.

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil administered the oath of office and secrecy to Singh at a brief function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan here this morning.

The latest developments took place a week after the 72-year-old Jat leader from Uttar Pradesh agreed to be a part of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA).

This is the third expansion of the Council of Ministers led by Dr. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh since the UPA-2 came to power.

Ajit Singh, who has been given the charge of the Civil Aviation portfolio, became the 33rd minister in the Union Cabinet and the 77th in the Council of Ministers.

The strength of the ruling UPA coalition has now gone up from the present total of 272 to 277 MPs, as Ajit Singh's RLD has five members in the Lok Sabha. (ANI)
