London, Dec 11 (ANI): Legendary Hindi film actor Dev Anand was given a tearful farewell by family members and friends, as he was cremated at Putney Vale Cemetery in London on Saturday.
The 88-year-old veteran actor, who arrived at England to select locations for his next film, passed away after suffering a massive cardiac at the Washington Mayfair Hotel in London on December 4.
Over 200 people from all walks of life, braving frost conditions, had gathered at the cemetery to pay their respects to the actor who was nicknamed as the 'Evergreen Hero' of Hindi movies.
His close family members including son, Suniel Anand, daughter Devina had attended while his wife, Kalpana Kartik skipped the funeral due to high blood pressure.
The acting Indian High Commissioner, Rakesh Prasad attended the funeral on behalf of the Indian government.
Among the celebrities who attended the funeral were Lord Meghnad Desai, Lord Billimoria, media magnate and real estate developer Sahara Subrato Roy and Kartar Lalvani, a close friend of Dev Anand.
At memorial meet later, Suneil Anand, fondly recalling his father, said his father's love would always remain as his departed father may be watching from somewhere up in the heaven.
"I remember my dad fondly. He was my best friend, my mentor and we worked closely on lot of projects together and I miss him dearly, my family misses him. But I know he is up there somewhere, looking down upon all of us here and smiling," said Suneil.
Some of the Dev Anand fans, who were present at the Putney Vale cemetery sang songs from his much acclaimed movie 'Guide'.
Dev Anand's ashes will be brought to India on December 14 for the memorial gathering at Mehbooh studio at Mumbai, on December 15.
Dev Anand was honoured with the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, India's highest award in cinema, in 2002 for his contribution to the field of art and cinema. (ANI)
