New Delhi, Nov 30 (ANI): Making a fresh appeal to Maoists to abjure violence, Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Wednesday said that they should come forward for talks with the government.
Talking to reporters after presenting the home ministry's monthly report for November 2011, Chidambaram said: "I have said it umpteen times that the state would not bend before anyone who believes in violence. That's why we have always said that shun violence first and come for talks"
" If the Maoists suspend violence, the government will issue dates for talks within 72 hours," he added.
On the alleged encounter of Maoist leader Koteswar Rao alias Kishenji, Chidambaram said that he was killed in a gunbattle and the government does not encourage encounters.
"Kishenji was killed in a fierce gunbattle with the security forces in a forest in West Midnapore district. I want to clear doubts by saying that he was not killed in a fake encounter," he added
Chidambaram also said that in the aftermath of Kishenji's killing a security alert has been issued in most of the Naxal-affected areas fearing a counterattack by the home-grown rebels
Kishenji and some of his accomplices were killed by the security forces in a joint operation in Burishol Forests of West Bengal's Purulia District on November 24. (ANI)
