India-Nepal trade route boosts employment opportunities in W. Bengal

Siliguri , Thu, 24 Nov 2011 ANI

Siliguri, Nov 24 (ANI): In a bid to boost bilateral trade, India and Nepal have opened the Fulbari Land Port, which in turn has created employment opportunities in West Bengal.

This has proven to be a much-needed economic lifeline for the residents of Siliguri.

Previously, the land route was accessible only to Bangladesh and Nepal, leading to a shortage of jobs for those living inside the Indian border.

General Secretary of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of North-Bengal (FOCIN), Biswajit Das, said the trade route would also help maintain cordial relations.

"This route is not only being used by Bangladesh but also by Nepal. The two countries have cordial relations. The businessmen maintain friendly relations through this. Through this route they can also export. The three countries, which export, Bhutan, Nepal and India are also providing employment opportunities," said Das.

As trucks from Bangladesh carrying jute, batteries and garments were unloaded on Indian soil and then loaded back into trucks from Nepal, Damban Khawas, a carrying and forwarding agent from Nepal, said that the daily clearance of goods ran smoothly.

"We are getting help. We come and go from Nepal on a daily basis. We don't face any problems and the goods are exported smoothly, " Khawas added.

The trade route is expected to expand in the future providing a further increase in employment opportunities in the area.

India's trade ties with Nepal are seen as crucial as part of an effort to reduce the economic and political isolation of the country's eastern and northeastern states. (ANI)
