Imphal/New Delhi, Oct 22 (ANI): Supporters and members of Communist Party of India (CPI) have sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to end the economic blockade of Manipur.
Interacting with mediapersons, the protestors condemned the economic blockade and said that the strike has affected everybody in the region.
District Secretary of CPI, K. Yaiskul, said that they would present a memorandum to the district's Deputy Commissioner in the matter.
"It is a very serious worry; you see the prices of potato, rice, petrol, and kerosene go sky high. So we have been suffering very much from this economic blockade. We are going to the Deputy Commissioner's office to submit a memorandum to him. Our memorandum should be submitted to the Prime Minister," he added.
Earlier, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) delegation had met Dr. Manmohan Singh and demanded imposition of President's Rule in Manipur, which is reeling under a two-month-long economic blockade.
The delegation, comprising of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley and party president Nitin Gadkari, met Dr. Singh along with some party leaders from Manipur.
The Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) had started its indefinite economic blockades on the National Highway 39 (Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati) and National Highway 53 (Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar) on August 1.
The Committee wants the state to give Sadar Hills the status of a full-fledged district and is demanding its removal from the purview of Senapati district.
The blockade has resulted in shortage of fuel, food and other essential commodities. Petrol costs Rs 150 per litre and a gas cylinder costs Rs 1500. (ANI)
