Hisar, Oct 17 (ANI): Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) candidate Kuldeep Bishnoi, son of former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal, won the Hisar by-poll on Monday defeating his nearest rival Ajay Chautala of Indian National Lok Dal by more than 6323 votes.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) backed Bishnoi for this seat. Meanwhile, his party workers have gone into a celebration mood with the verdict.
Congress Party came third in the polls.
There were in all 40 candidates, mostly independents, in the fray.
This seat was considered significant, as Team Anna had aggressively campaigned against the Congress Party here.
Congress Party, however, maintained that there was no Anna effect in the by-polls to the Hisar Lok Sabha seat.
"I don't think Hisar had voted for Congress, when they hadn't heard of Anna. Hisar is a bastion of some groups in Haryana politics, we knew that but we wanted to put up a good fight and we did. But that does not mean, the rest of Haryana is not with us, Union Law and Justice Minister Salman Khurshid told media persons in Delhi.
The Hisar seat fell vacant after the death of former Haryana Chief Minister Bhajan Lal in June this year. (ANI)
