Strong showing in Sheffield Shield can help Khwaja regain Test berth

Sydney, Mon, 17 Oct 2011 ANI

Sydney, Oct 17 (ANI): New South Wales batsman Usman Khwaja, who failed to seize the opportunities in Sri Lanka to cement his Test berth, can allay any fears of being replaced by David Warner for the tour of South Africa with another strong showing this week in Adelaide

NSW open their Sheffield Shield campaign today, and Khawaja will be striving to convince the selectors who dumped him in Sri Lanka that they should not ignore him for the coming series against South Africa.

Khawaja will come under pressure from state teammate and man of the moment Warner when Andrew Hilditch's outgoing panel discuss their Test squad for South Africa, which is likely to be named later this week.

The series against Sri Lanka was a resounding success for Australia but not so for Khawaja, who lost his place to Shaun Marsh, The Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Batting at No.3, Marsh made a century on debut followed by a classy 81 after replacing Khawaja in his next Test.

Howevr, Khawaja could consider himself unfortunate after scoring 21 and 26 on a batsman's minefield in the first Test then being left stranded by a declaration in his next match before he had a chance to capitalise on a friendlier wicket. (ANI)
