Washington, Oct 12 (ANI): Tensions between Washington and Tehran are getting worse in the wake of the reports that Iran backed a plot to assassinate Saudi Arabia's ambassador to the United States.
Military commanders in Tehran allegedly ordered an Iranian-American to blow up embassies in Washington and to assassinate the Saudi Arabian ambassador Adel Al-Jubeir in a 'deadly murder plot'.
Attorney General Eric Holder, while announcing the plot and the filing of criminal charges against two individuals involved in the plot, said it was 'directed and approved by elements of the Iranian government.'
He further pointed out the alleged involvement of members of Iran's special operations Quds Force, Fox News reports.
According to the report, US officials made clear they would use the plot to marshal international pressure against the regime.
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that Washington would work with its allies to "send a very strong message that this kind of action, which violates international norms, must be ended."
Meanwhile, the Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on five people allegedly linked to the plot, including four members of the Quds Force.
Two of them, Manssor Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri, were charged on Tuesday in New York federal court.
According to US officials the suspects in the case were working on a 'murder for hire' scheme to kill Jubeir using explosives.
Arbabsiar, who was arrested by federal agents on September 29, later confessed to his involvement and said senior Quds officials were directing the plot, the report said. (ANI)
