Hopes pinned on Sonia Gandhi to resolve Arunachal political crisis

Itanagar, Mon, 03 Oct 2011 ANI

Itanagar, Oct.3 (ANI): Hopes are still pinned on UPA chairperson and Congress party president Sonia Gandhi to resolve the political and leadership crisis in Arunachal Pradesh.

A cross-section of Congress leaders from that state have said that the general public is dismayed over recent political developments and expects Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Gandhi to undertake damage control measures at the earliest.

The infighting within the ruling Congress party in Arunachal Pradesh is an open secret now with the Congress legislators getting polarized.

While Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin has been making all efforts to protect his fort, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee president and Public Works Department Minister Nabam Tuki, is leaving no stone unturned to seize the post of chief minister from Gamlin.

Leaders of both camps were recently in New Delhi trying to convince the central Congress leadership about their credibility.

Meetings were held with All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Arunachal, Dr Dhaniram Shandil and secretary Sanjay Bapna besides Oscar Fernandez, known as Sonia's crisis manager. They also reportedly met Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.

Though a few rounds of discussions have already taken place, it is reliably learnt that a meeting with Sonia's political advisor, Ahmad Patel, has reportedly been scheduled before the ball is thrown to Sonia's court for a final decision.

Many groups owing allegiance to both sides are dispatching letters to Sonia with claims and counter-claims, while a senior leader commented that the home ministry should be getting a report on the state of affairs of the state on a daily basis.

In fact, when a group of ministers led by Home Minister Takar Marde called on Governor J J Singh last Thursday, he asked Marde to submit a detailed report on the law and order situation and steps proposed by the government of Arunachal Pradesh to check any deterioration and re-instill confidence among the people.

The governor's concern over some recent incidents in the capital complex and in some parts of the state cannot be overlooked.

All said and done, however, the common citizenry feels things should settle down at the earliest in the larger interests of the state and its people.andhi cannot afford to neglect this Himalayan state, as it is a safe Congress bastion since it graduated to parliamentary democracy in 1975.
