Sydney, Sep 17(ANI): Lleyton Hewitt and Chris Guccione ensured that Australia took a 2-1 lead over Switzerland in the Davis Cup world group play-off against Switzerland at the Royal Sydney Golf Club today.

Hewitt and Guccione defeated Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) in the doubles match.

It was vintage Hewitt out on court, firing incredible returns and looking unstoppable.

Guccione managed a gutsy big serving performance despite aggravating an achilles injury midway through the match, the Herald Sun reports.

Now, Hewitt will face Wawrinka and Federer will play Bernard Tomic in the final two matches on Sunday.

If Hewitt wins his match it would secure Australia's place back in the Davis Cup world group for 2012.

Australia have not been in the world group since 2007. (ANI)
