London, Sept 16 (ANI): A school is being sued for 20,000-pounds-compensation by someone who slipped on a sweet wrapper in a carpeted corridor.

The legal action is just one of 100 crazy cases, which will cost schools in Sussex 1million pounds if they are all successful.

Schools across the UK are now facing a massive total of 40million pounds of claims.

In the past three years, East and West Sussex County Council and Brighton and Hove Council schools have coughed up 200,000 pounds for accidents on their school grounds.

They included 23,000 pounds to someone who tripped on a mat on a classroom floor, 35,770 pounds to a teacher who was injured leading a pupil away from the scene of a fight and 35,770 pounds to another teacher who tore a wrist ligament tripping over a computer wire.

Other claims include a Crawley pupil who wants 75,000 pounds after falling from a climbing frame and a claimant suing for £90,000 for back and neck pain after being hit on the head with a football.

Parents of another child are claiming 15,000 pounds after the pupil got a splinter from play equipment.

"The county council is covered by insurance against claims of this nature and all claims are properly and thoroughly investigated and considered on their own merits," the Daily Star quoted a West Sussex County Council spokesman as saying.

A spokesman for East Sussex said: "In the vast majority of cases we denied liability and no payments were made." (ANI)
