Nevada (US), Sept 4 (ANI): The Krishna-Avanti Primary School in Leicester City, which opened on September 1, is the first one along with another London school among the 24 pioneering flagship state-funded "Free Schools" set to open in the UK, according to reports.
The Krishna-Avanti Primary School will function in an "environment centered on loving service to Lord Krishna" and its vision includes "nurturing character and conduct consistent with Hindu virtues", "a balanced vegetarian diet and opportunities to practice yoga, meditation", etc. Christopher Spall is the Head Teacher.
Other schools opening under this program include Maharishi School in Lancashire, which will include daily practice of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's Transcendental Meditation; and Nishkam Primary School in Birmingham, which will take "inspiration from the Sikh Ethos" and "will be driven and sustained by the principle of being Nishkam (selfless)".
Meanwhile, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, in a statement in Nevada (USA) on Saturday, commended the efforts of the Krishna-Avanti Primary School to pass on Hindu spirituality, values, concepts and traditions to the next generations.
Zed, who is president of Universal Society of Hinduism, pointed out that it was a tough task amidst so many distractions in the consumerist society and attempts of this Krishna School should be highly applauded.
He stressed that instead of running after materialism; we should focus on inner search and realization of Self and work towards achieving moksh (liberation), which was the goal of Hinduism.
According to the UK Department of Education, "Free Schools are non-profit making, independent, state-funded schools, and are said to be inspired by the charter schools of USA and the Free School project of Sweden. (ANI)
