Lahore, August 18(ANI): Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif has demanded fresh parliamentary elections in the country.
The PML-N chief said that problems faced by the country could be resolved only if elections were held immediately.
"I had asked President [Asif Ali] Zardari four months ago to hold general elections in order to rid the people of the prevailing atmosphere of hopelessness and frustration," Nawaz told Geo News.
He said it was the responsibility of the entire country to stand up against the government and ensure that no one played with its mandate.
He said the responsibility of ousting the government rested with the public, adding that no institution should make such a decision.
Nawaz also said that the PML-N had tried to develop a working relationship with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) initially, but that there was no substance to the relationship.
"We even had to receive taunts from the media for supporting Zardari," he recalled.
Responding to a question, the former prime minister said that the PPP and the PML-Q had similar interests, adding that the Q-League, and not Zardari, was responsible for the violation of court verdicts.
"If the government is bent upon reducing its own tenure, then it should go through the people's power." (ANI)
