New Delhi, Aug 1 (ANI): Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni has condoled the death of Inder Jit, veteran journalist and former member of the Lok Sabha.
In her condolence message Soni said: "The untimely death of Shri Inder Jit has left a void in the field of journalism which will be difficult to fill. Shri Inder Jit was a multi-faceted personality who gave journalism a new dimension in the sphere of political reporting and understanding of issues that concerned the common people."
"As the Editor of INFA, Shri Inder Jit set new standards of objective, credible, fair and impartial reporting. As Member of Parliament, Shri Inder Jit's contribution will always be remembered for his incisive comments and interventions during debates on the floor of the House. His death is a tremendous loss to the nation," she said.
"I pray to God that the members of the bereaved family gather the strength to overcome the crisis," she added.
Inder Jit, who played a pivotal role in negotiating the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council (DGHC) Agreement in the 1980s, died here on Sunday after a prolonged illness. He was 84.
He breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) after suffering a cardiac arrest. He had been fighting cancer for a long time and was admitted to the AIIMS a week ago.
Inder Jit was trained as a journalist initially on the Hindustan Times and thereafter on the Daily Telegraph and The Times, London in 1952. He was the political and parliamentary correspondent of The Times of India in New Delhi as also its Pakistan Correspondent before he joined INFA as its Editor in 1962.
His weekly column on national affairs entitled "Political Diary", prior to his election to India's Parliament was carried by scores of newspapers, including The Economic Times and The Tribune, all over India.
He has represented India four times as a delegate to the UN General Assembly and to the Human Rights Commission. (ANI)
