Islamabad, July 22(ANI): Pakistan has accused the United States of a "slander campaign" over the arrest of Kashmiri American Council (KAC) executive director Ghulam-Nabi Fai, who has been accused of acting as a Pakistani spy in the US.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has claimed that Fai and a second man, Zaheer Ahmad, a 63-year-old US citizen and resident of Pakistan, had channelled million of dollars from Pakistan's spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to influence members of the US Congress on the Kashmir issue.
"A demarche was made to the US Embassy in Islamabad today to register our concerns, in particular the slander campaign against Pakistan. Our Embassy in Washington has also been asked to ascertain details," the Daily Times quoted a Pakistan Foreign Office statement, as saying.
The statement further said that Pakistan appreciates the contributions made by the KAC and Fai for the cause of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Jammu and Kashmir is one of the oldest disputes on the agenda of the UN. There are several UN Security Council resolutions on the subject that affirm the inalienable right of the Kashmiris to self-determination," the statement said.
"Upholding fundamental rights of Kashmiris is the fundamental responsibility of the international community and all conscientious people who value human rights and values," it added.
Fai and Ahmad are accused of having conspired to act as agents of a foreign government without that interest being declared and falsifying, concealing and covering up the fact.oth are US citizens and face a prison sentence of five years if convicted. (ANI)
