New Delhi, June 14 (ANI): Under fresh attack over the alleged rape-and-murder of a minor girl within the compound of Nighasan police station in Lakhimpur District, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati has written a letter to the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, saying that her government is being targeted.
"The Central Commissions are very active on any minor incident in Uttar Pradesh. The Centre is silent on the atrocities committed in Congress-ruled States. Central Commissions are acting like political organizations," said Mayawati in her letter to the Prime Minister.
The Uttar Pradesh Congress earlier in the day charged the Mayawati Government claiming that the authorities are trying to shield the accused in the case.
"The state government is trying everything to sabotage the case. The way the chief minister is carrying on the inquiry, it is very clear that she is trying to protect the criminals there, which in this case is the UP police," said Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi.
"We have proved that she was murdered. We will also prove that there was an attempt to rape her," she added.
The Uttar Pradesh Congress President further demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the Lakhimpur incident.
"We do not believe the CB-CID or the DG or the police or Mayawati herself. We want a CBI inquiry into the matter. We will continue to pressurise the government to act and punish the guilty. We will provide justice to the girl and her family," said Joshi.
Minister of State for Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath condemning the incident, on Monday accused the Mayawati Government of being insensitive to this issue.
"I think what happened was very wrong. I have already written to the National Commission for Women regarding the murder of a minor girl in Lakhimpur. After getting a report from them, I can take some action. It is very insensitive that Uttar Pradesh Chief Mayawati is not doing much about this issue," said Tirath.
"Such things are happening again and again and the government is repeatedly saying that they will write reports. I think these are important issues that need to be addressed immediately," she added.
Tirath also informed the media that she has written a letter to Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram, appealing to him to take immediate action in the case.
The second autopsy conducted on the minor girl's body, which was found hanging from a tree within the compound of Nighasan police station in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur District on Friday night, yesterday confirmed that the victim was murdered.
The Uttar Pradesh Government has ordered a CB-CID probe into the case.
Missing since Friday evening, the 14-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree inside the premises of Nighasan Police Station.
The victim's mother in her complaint had alleged that the girl was raped and murdered. (ANI)
