Kolkata, June 14 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is all set to table the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Bill, 2011 in the state Assembly on Tuesday.
The state Cabinet on Monday approved the draft Singur Bill and copies of the draft Bill have been circulated among legislators.
The 280-page Bill, appending a list of owners who didn't take compensation cheques, doesn't make a mention of the amount of land to be returned.
On Thursday, Banerjee had announced an ordinance to reclaim land at Singur.
"We have passed an ordinance as it was a very urgent one. The Governor has signed it some time back. Through the ordinance we have returned 400 acres of land to the farmers. The government had taken this resolution before itself," Banerjee had said.
"The remaining 600 acres will be kept open for industry... The Tatas can set up a factory if they want," she added.
She further said: "If they demand compensation without going in for industry on the 600 acres, we will give them compensation through legal means by appointing an arbitrator."
"We were committed to the people of Singur to return the 400 acres to the unwilling farmers," she said, adding that the state government will consult local MLAs on the procedure to be followed.
The ordinance allowed the state government the 997.11 acres of land lying with the Tatas and vendors in Singur to fulfil the promise of returning plots to disgruntled farmers.
The land had been allotted to the Tatas by the erstwhile state government ruled by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) led Left Front for building a motor car plant in the Singur area. (ANI)
