Its 60 years since Gandhi is gone

New Delhi, Wed, 30 Jan 2008 Binita Tiwari

“Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth,” said Albert Einstein on Mahatma Gandhi. Yes Gandhi was a phenomenon when he was alive and still is when he is gone.

He was the doyen of peace, non violence and through out his life advocated these principles with much ardor.

This day in 1948 the frail Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse, who shot him dead while Gandhi was on his way to prayer ground at Birla House. The man died and took his last breath uttering Hey Ram…While he faltered on the ground the evening cloud turned crimson, the sun set beyond the horizon and there was yelling all around as the heart that used to pump many heart has refused to pump.

But the assassinator could not kill his teachings and his legacy; in fact Gandhism became a more intensified word, to be found across the globe. The relevance of his teaching has become an utmost need where violence defines the day to day life.

Gandhi practiced what he taught; he kept faith and courage in his principles and asked to shrug Non violence, if it were used as a cover for cowardice. His life become a guiding light and still continues to inspire many lives. He could unite the whole India, the men, the women into one to fight for independence through Non cooperation, Civil disobedience and Satyagraha.

A man in dhoti took the path which other can not imagine, he was a Hindu whose heart cried for the pangs and sorrow of Muslims and Christians. His convictions were his friend.

Gandhi’s ashes immersed

The last remains of Gandhi, his ashes have been immersed in Arabian Sea by Mahatma’s great grand daughter Nilamben Parikh. After Gandhi’s funeral his ashes were distributed in urns across the country for memorial services. Most of the urns containing his remains were immersed but two of such urns, one found in a bank locker at Bhubaneswar in Orissa 1997 was immersed in Sangam at Allahabad and the other which was immersed today was kept at Mani Bhawan in south Mumbai and was donated by Bharat Narayan, the grandson of Jamnalal Bajaj who wanted the ashes to be kept properly. But the family member of Mahatma decided to offer his ashes to the vast sea.

Mary Frye poem, …Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am in a thousand winds that blow, I am the starshine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom, I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing, Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there. I do not die, best describe the way he is alive till today
