'Libyan gang rape victim' Imam al-Obeidi flees to US with Clinton's help

Washington , Mon, 06 Jun 2011 ANI

Washington, June 5 (ANI): A Libyan woman who claimed that she was gang raped by 15 of dictator Muammar al-Gaddafis henchmen in Tripoli, has fled to the US, her sister has claimed.

The Daily Mail quoted Marwa al-Obeidi says her sister Iman was flown out of Benghazi early this morning with the help of US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

However, it is not clear as of now where she has been kept in the US.

In March, al-Obeidi had rushed into Tripoli's Rixos Hotel and told foreign correspondents that she was stopped at a checkpoint and raped by Gaddafi's forces for two days. However, before she could complete her story, she was dragged away by the Libyan authorities.

She disappeared for several days, and then turned up in Tunisia and later Qatar.

However, she was deported from Qatar against her will and sent to the rebel-held Benghazi city in Libya after coming under pressure from the rebels to return to Libya for some time.

She had come under fire for complaining about the lack of support she had received from the rebels and in particular from rebel official Mahmoud Shammam in Doha. (ANI)
