Chandigarh, May 29 (ANI) The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has urged Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to intervene and prevent the death sentence of Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) militant Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar, whose mercy petition was rejected by President Pratibha Patil.
In a statement, the SAD has sought direct and immediate intervention of the Prime Minister to save the life of Bhullar on humanitarianism grounds.
"The Prime Minister should personally see that the highest norms of jurisprudence, legal precedents and issues of statesmanship are kept firmly in view in the matter and a sympathetic view taken," the statement added
The statement was released on behalf of party patron Parkash Singh Badal and president Sukhbir Singh Badal.
The Supreme Court had on Monday expressed surprise and asked the Centre the reasons for the eight-year delay in deciding the clemency plea of Bhullar.
Bhullar was sentenced to death for masterminding the car bomb attack on then Youth Congress President Maninderjit Singh Bitta, which left nine persons dead just a stone" throw away from Parliament on September 10, 1993. (ANI)
