Alcohol-fueled avian vertigo hits Darwin

Melbourne, Tue, 24 May 2011 ANI

Melbourne, May 24 (ANI): A vet in Darwin is gearing up to deal with another alcohol-fueled avian vertigo this year, as many lorikeets were reported falling from the sky in a drunken state.

According to Ark Animal Hospital vet Dr Stephen Cutter, the birds were unlikely to be drinking alcohol but could be eating from a plant that causes them to become drunk.

"It's probably a plant with alcohol or toxins in a plant making it worse," the Adelaide Now quoted him as saying.e added that the animal hospital has already received about half a dozen sick parrots so far this year.

The noisy lorikeets who are usually disliked for creating a racket are also referred to as the 'evil' birds.

Cutter was unsure if angry residents trying to sleep might have poisoned the birds.

"I know they're not popular. They're lovely pets, but evil when wild," he added. (ANI)
