New Delhi, Mon, 16 May 2011 ANI

New Delhi, May 16 (ANI): Expressing concern on the rising road accidents in the country and its consequent negative impacts on the economy, public health and the general welfare of the people, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Dr. C.P. Joshi today said although various road safety improvement programmes were being implemented, the overall situation was far from satisfactory.

Chairing the seventh Consultative Committee meeting of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on the subject "Road Safety" here today, he described the four E's viz. education, enforcement, engineering and emergency care of road accident victims, as the main thrust of accident prevention and control across the world.

He informed the members that the Government has been focusing on all the four approaches in its policies and programme.

Joshi said that four separate working groups on four E's have been formed, which would deliberate in detail and submit their recommendations on short term and long term measures for immediate implementation so as to curb road accidents in the country.

"Each working group is to submit its report within three months. These groups have started deliberations on various aspects of road safety," he added.

He informed the members that the ministry is launching vigorous campaign in media to generate awareness of various road safety programmes among the general public.

Joshi further said that the ministry has decided to give a lot of thrust on motor driving training as most of the fatalities occur due of driver's faults.

"100 per cent financial assistance is being given by the Ministry to States/UTs for setting up of modern institutes of driving training and research to produce good drivers/trainers as well as impart refresher training to the drivers," he added. (ANI)
