Jayalalitha sworn in as Tamil Nadu CM

Chennai, May 16 (ANI): All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief J Jayalalithaa was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu for a third term on Monday along with 33 others in her Cabinet.

 

State Governor Surjit Singh Barnala administered oath of secrecy to Jayalalithaa at the Madras University's centenary auditorium here.

 

Among the high-profile political leaders present at the swearing-in ceremony were Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, CPI national secretary D Raja and TDP chief Chandra Babu Naidu.

 

At least 25 members of the Jayalalithaa Cabinet are new faces.

 

Jayalalithaa will hold the home, police, general administration and prevention of corruption departments, among others.

 

Reports suggest that former minister O Pannerselvam will be allotted the finance portfolio while another senior leader, KA Sengottaiyan, will get agriculture.

 

Natham R Viswanathan will look after power, prohibition and excise.

 

Apart from Jayalalithaa, the AIADMK government will have two women ministers - S Gokula Indira (commercial taxes and registration) and Selvi Ramajayam (social welfare).

 

Governor Barnala had on Sunday approved the allocation of portfolios as recommended by Jayalalithaa.

 

The AIADMK-led front won 204 of the 234 seats in the assembly elections. (ANI)
