Mumbai, Apr 26 (ANI): Nurses in all government hospitals in Maharashtra, including two medical colleges, went on strike on Tuesday over a demand for better working conditions, and grant of allowances as per the Sixth Pay Commission.
They also said posts should be filled up as per Indian Nursing Council norms.
Nurses also said they were upset about the change in dress code.
Kasturi Kadam, joint secretary of Maharashtra Government Nurses Federation (MGNF) said the government had always neglected their demands in providing even personal protective gear like gloves, masks and soaps.
"There is a scarcity of medical equipment and clothes needed for the service of patients. We have to ask patients to buy the needed material from outside. We are facing problem in providing good service to patients. We also want vacant seats of nurses falling under Scale IV to be filled. We also demand salary under the Sixth Pay Commission by the Maharashtra Government," said Kadam.
Renuka Saigorkar, a member of the MGNF, said hospital authorities had arranged for student nurses to look after patients.
The MGNF is threatening to go an indefinite strike from June 27 if their demands are not met by then. (ANI)
