'Humanity' not random product of evolution, but God's work: Pope

Washington , Mon, 25 Apr 2011 ANI

Washington, Apr 25 (ANI): Pope Benedict XVI has told devotees in his Easter Vigil homily that humanity is not a random product of evolution, but has a "divine reasoning" behind it.

The Scotsman quoted the pope as saying that it was wrong to think at some point "in some tiny corner of the cosmos, there evolved randomly some species of living being capable of reasoning".

"If man were merely a random product of evolution in some place on the margins of the universe, then his life would make no sense or might even be a chance of nature. But no, reason is there at the beginning: creative, divine reason," he added.

Yesterday, he celebrated Mass in St Peter's Square and gave his traditional Easter greetings in dozens of languages, his last major celebration before this week's beatification of Pope John Paul II.

Pope Benedict baptised six adults on Saturday night from Switzerland, Albania, Russia, Peru, Singapore and China, pouring water over their heads as he prayed. (ANI)
