35,000 poll security personnel deployed in Assam

Guwahati, Mar 31 (ANI): Altogether 35,000 personnel of various security forces have come to Assam to ensure law and order situation during the upcoming Assam assembly election.

 

Talking to reporters, Additional Chief Electoral Officer, M C Sahu said: "Besides 96 companies of security forces in the state, additional 350 companies have been brought in from other parts of the country for conducting peaceful elections in the insurgency-affected state."

 

"The forces would be deployed in different areas of the 126 constituencies in the state. Two helicopters have also been kept ready to meet any emergency, he added.

 

He said surveillance cameras would record the polling process at 1,350 polling booths during the first phase of voting on April 4.

 

"The selected polling stations will be put under camera surveillance - both video and still - to ensure smooth conduct of the Assembly polls in the state. It will enable the commission to monitor the polling procedure in a more efficient manner," he added.

 

"Similarly, in the second phase of voting on April 11, out of a total of 12,589 polling stations, 1,148 polling stations will be kept under camera surveillance," he said

 

In the first phase of polling, out of 11,264 stations 2,093 have been declared 'hyper-sensitive' and 2,985 'sensitive'.

 

Besides, 817 villages had been identified as 'vulnerable'.

 

In the second phase, out of 12,589 polling stations, 2,033 have been declared 'hyper sensitive' and 4,175 'sensitive'.

 

SMS-based poll monitoring system has also been introduced to oversee the entire election scenario in the polling stations

 

Assam will hold two-phase elections in which 62 constituencies will go to polls on April 4 and 11.

 

In all, 23,813 polling booths have been set up for 18 million voters to exercise their franchise. (ANI)
