Mock drill checks preparedness in Delhi's Khan market

Tue, 01 Jan 2008 IANS

New Delhi, Oct 1 (IANS) Delhi Police late Wednesday carried out a mock drill at the busy Khan Market to ascertain the response of various agencies and the market association in case of a bomb threat.

The drill lasted for more than 45 minutes and the market was completely evacuated. A bomb disposal squad and sniffer dogs carried out intensive searches in the New Delhi market which houses more than 200 shops.

Ambulances and fire-fighting tenders were also pressed into the service. Hospitals were also sent messages to be ready to handle any unwarranted situation.

At the time of the mock drill, a large number of people were out in the market - more than the usual number due to the festival season.

"We wanted to check the response of the market association and people and coordination among agencies. We would analyse the results of the mock drill and would remove lapses, if any," said a police officer.
