Mexico's ambassador to UK complains of insults to his country on Top Gear

London, Wed, 02 Feb 2011 ANI

London, Feb 2 (ANI): Mexico's ambassador to UK has complained that "offensive, xenophobic and humiliating" comments had been made about his country on British television series Top Gear.

Richard Hammond, who presented the show along with Jeremy Clarkson and James May, had said, while discussing a Mexican sports car, that vehicles reflected national characteristics.

"Mexican cars are just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent, overweight, leaning against a fence asleep looking at a cactus with a blanket with a hole in the middle on as a coat," the BBC quoted Hammond as saying while reviewing the Mastretta.

Clarkson said he was confident he would not receive any complaints about their comments because the Mexican ambassador would be asleep.

But Mexico's ambassador, Eduardo Medina Mora, did hear about their comments and wrote to the BBC about the "insults", and demanded an apology.

"The presenters of the programme resorted to outrageous, vulgar and inexcusable insults to stir bigoted feelings against the Mexican people, their culture, as well as their official representative in the United Kingdom," he wrote.

"These offensive, xenophobic and humiliating remarks only serve to reinforce negative stereotypes and perpetuate prejudice against Mexico and its people," he added. (ANI)
