Ishant threesome act presses claim for Perth
Delhi's lanky seamer Ishant Sharma took three wickets on the second day of the three-day tie between the visitors and ACT XI played at the Manuka, Oval on Friday as he pressed his claim harder after his performance, for a likely place, in the team for the third Test starting from January 16 in Perth.
If it was Ishant who did commendable job for India , while John stole the show for the ACT XI on the second day of the match against the tourists, while his namesake Chris Roger pushed his case with a timely 60.
The 20-year-old Canberra local, defied the Indian bowling attack with a confident 98, missing out a deserving hundred, saw his team ended on 8 for 292 with hosts still trailing by 33 runs.
The likes of Irfan Pathan, Pankaj Singh and Vikram Singh failed to seize the opportunity to stake their claim for selection. Ishant made early inroads into the hosts' batting line-up by striking three quick dismissals and pushed them at 83 for three.
Sharma bowled his heart out with grit and gumption on a placid flat track and accounted Ed Cowan (14), Johanthan Dean (0) and Mark Higgs (1).
ACT XI went in dire straits when Chris Rogers fell leg before to Harbhajan Singh, having made 60 in the team total of 100 for four. He was trying to sweep a fullish delivery.
John Rogers then took charge of the proceedings and came out with an aggressive attack as the Indians struggled in the heat. John put on 74 runs for the fifth wicket with Randall Starr (27) and 67 runs for the sixth wicket with James Crosthwaite (27).
India used nine bowlers throughout the day with Sharma struck three times in his first spell of the day and finished 26 for three from 11 overs.
