'La La Land' leads nomination pack for Golden Globes 2017

Los Angeles, Dec 12 (IANS) Romantic musical comedy drama "La La Land" leads the nomination pack for the Golden Globes 2017, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) announced here on Monday.

It is nominated in categories; Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy (Ryan Gosling), Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy (Emma Stone), Best Director - Motion Picture (Damian Chazelle), Best Original Screenplay, Best Original Song - Motion Picture ("City of stars") and Best Original Score - Motion Picture (Justin Hurwitz).

In the Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy category, "La La Land" competes with "20th Century Women", "Deadpool", "Florence Foster Jenkins" and "Sing Street", according to the official Golden Globes website.

The competitors for the Best Motion Picture - Drama are "Hacksaw Ridgea, "Hell Or High Water", "Lion", aceManchester By The Sea" and "Moonlight".

Those vying for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama honour include Casey Affleck ("Manchester By The Sea"), Joel Edgerton ("Loving"), Andrew Garfield ("Hacksaw Ridge"), Viggo Mortensen ("Captain Fantastic") and Denzel Washington ("Fences").

Amy Adams ("Arrival"), Jessica Chastain ("Miss Sloane"), Isabelle Huppert ("Ellea), Ruth Negga ("Loving") and Natalie Portman ("Jackie") are in competition for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama trophy.

For the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy award, Gosling is competing with Colin Farrell ("The Lobstera), Hugh Grant ("Florence Foster Jenkins"), Jonah Hill ("War Dogs") and Ryan Reynolds ("Deadpool").

Stone is vying for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy honour alongside Annette Bening ("20th Century Women"), Lily Collins ("Rules Don't Apply"), Hailee Steinfeld ("The Edge of Seventeen") and Meryl Streep ("Florence Foster Jenkins").

In the Supporting Role in a Motion Picture category, the actors competing are Mahershala Ali ("Moonlight"), Jeff Bridges ("Hell or High Water"), Simon Helberg ("Florence Foster Jenkins"), Dev Patel ("Lion") and Aaron Taylor-Johnson ("Nocturnal Animals").

The actresses in competition for the category are Viola Davis ("Fences"), Naomie Harris ("Moonlight"), Nicole Kidman ("Lion"), Octavia Spencer (aceHidden Figures") and Michelle Williams ("Manchester by the Sea").

For the Best Original Screenplay, "La La Land" has neck-to-neck competition from aceNocturnal Animals", "Moonlight", "Manchester By The Sea" and "Hell Or High Water".

Among the Best Motion Picture - Foreign Language nominees are "Divines" (France), "Elle" (France), "Neruda" (Chile), "The Salesman" (Iran/France) and "Toni Erdmann" (Germany).

The Best Motion Picture - Animated category nominations include "Kubo and the Two Strings", "Moana", aceMy Life As A Zucchini", "Sing" and "Zootopia".
