As it was expected earlier, Australia once again clinched on the World Cup and defeated New Zealand by seven wickets at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. It was the fifth cricket World Cup victory for Australia in which Michael Clarke signed off from One Day internationals with 74 runs magnificently.
It was first time when New Zealand was playing final of World Cup and remained unable to perform even its natural game. The starting of the inning was not good as captain Brendon McCullum was bowled without scoring from the third ball he faced.
However it was a glorious innings for its batsman for the fourth wicket partnership of 111 between as Ross Taylor (40) and Grant Elliott (83) left no stone unturned to provide a better platform for the country.
According to media reports, New Zealand had reached 150 for three with 15 overs remaining when Faulkner struck twice in the first over of the batting powerplay.
Ultimately, Australia succeeded in its efforts to limited the Kiwis to just 183, with Mitchell Johnson and James Faulkner both taking three wickets.
However the early innings was not favourable for Ausralia as it got off to a poor start as Aaron Finch fell for a duck with just two runs on the board.
However it was Captain Michael Clarke who picked the responsibility on his shoulder and made his first ODI half century falling for 74.
Smith was accompanied at the crease by Shane Watson and was able to hit the winning runs to seal an emphatic victory in front of a world record crowd inside the MCG.
