BJP leader Sumitra Mahajan was unanimously elected the 16 th Lok Sabha Speaker. Her name was proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and seconded by BJP patriarch L.K. Advani and union Home Minister Rajnath Singh among many others.
Today she was unanimously elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker for the 16th Lok Sabha.
It is noted that Mahajan, eighth-time MP, is the second woman to be elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker after Meira Kumar.
All the leading leaders from all the political parties congratulate Mahajan for her election as the Lok Sabha speaker. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated Sumitra Mahajan on being elected the speaker of 16th Lok Sabha, and said it was a moment of pride for the world's largest democracy to have a woman at the top position of parliament.
Modi said, "The prime minister congratulated Sumitra Mahajan (ji) on her unanimous election as the speaker of the Lok Sabha."
Addressing the house after the election, Modi said, "It is a moment of pride for all of us that in the world's largest democracy and at the top position of the temple of democracy, a woman is seating and will be looking after the proceedings of the house."
Modi said her experience will be very crucial and important for the house.
He also thanked all members of the house for unanimously electing Sumitra Mahajan the speaker and following the tradition of the house.
