Change in Microsoft: Bill Gates technology adviser, Satya Nadella new CEO calls for prioritizing innovation

New Delhi, Thu, 06 Feb 2014 NI Wire

Microsoft is going through a lot of changes lately, from buying Nokia to Steve Ballmer deciding to end his glorious career as company's CEO to a very humble Satya Nadella filling his shoes and Bill Gates back as a technology adviser.

Microsoft on Wednesday named Hyderabad-born Satya Nadella as the new CEO of the company who will take over from Steve Ballmer when he retires. He is only the third CEO in the company's 39-year history. He had been working in the company for the past 22 years.

Satya Nadella will get 1.2 million dollars in salary for his first year at the top job. The salary is a substantial jump on his previous salary of 675,000 dollars and considerably more than the 700,000 dollars former CEO Steve Ballmer earned in Microsoft.

He will also get an additional stock award of 13.2 million dollars starting in Microsoft's 2015 fiscal year.

Soon after Satya was named as CEO, he published a letter to employees asking them to "prioritize innovation" and "help drive cultural change."

Nadella wrote, "Today is a very humbling day for me. It is an incredible honor for me to lead and serve this great company of ours".

"While we have seen great success, we are hungry to do more. Our industry does not respect tradition - it only respects innovation. This is a critical time for the industry and for Microsoft".

"Make no mistake, we are headed for greater places - as technology evolves and we evolve with and ahead of it. Our job is to ensure that Microsoft thrives in a mobile and cloud-first world."

Satya was the head of the Cloud and Enterprise Group, one of the fastest-growing divisions of Microsoft.

Nadella said he was at Microsoft "for the same reason I think most people join Microsoft - to change the world through technology that empowers people to do amazing things. I am here because we have unparalleled capability to make an impact."

Co-founder Bill Gates who took over a new role as "technology adviser" also praised the new CEO and said that he believes in his ability.

"There is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella," said Gates in a prepared statement. "Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision, and the ability to bring people together."

"His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth."

Satya Nadella attended Hyderabad Public School in Begumpet and earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication from the Manipal University before coming to the US.

After moving to the US, he earned a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Chicago.

Prior to Microsoft, he worked at Sun Microsystems, now owned by Oracle.
