Nepal's Maoist party wants cases against its cadre dropped

Nepal,Indo-Pak/Pakistan, Fri, 18 Apr 2014 IANS

Kathmandu, April 18 (IANS) Nepal's main opposition Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) demanded Friday that there should be an agreement among parties to bring all the war-era cases under the jurisdiction of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission or transitional justice mechanism.

The UCPN (Maoist) also demanded that all the cases against its cadres in the regular court proceedings be dropped, Xinhua reported.

The party is obstructing the parliament session with its demand for release of its 16 cadres arrested in connection to war-era cases.

The party has also said that some western countries were funding and provoking the war-era cases in Nepal.

The disruption of parliament session has affected the discussion on two bills related to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the Commission on Enforced Disappearance.

Party leaders say if the bills related to transitional justice mechanism were adopted, it would allow the constitution drafting process to proceed.
