Romanian Olympic committee chairman resigns

Romania,Sports, Wed, 16 Apr 2014 IANS

Bucharest, April 16 (IANS) Octavian Morariu resigned Tuesday from his post as chairman of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR).

"I've led the institution for 10 years and I think I was a dedicated chairman in all these years," said the official, announcing that he decided to retire to avoid activity overload, given the other programmes he has in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and in the European Rugby Association, Xinhua reported.

"All my work requires me to be one hundred percent careful with what happens to COSR. There should be someone to handle the day-to-day activity. It would be for me a lack of morality and ethics to keep things like this," Morariu stressed.

Morariu has been the COSR chairman since 2004. Before holding this post, he held the chairmanship of the Romanian Rugby Federation.

Morariu, an IOC member, was designated by President Thomas Bach to take part in the Commission for Olympic Programmes and the Commission for International Relations of the international forum, the two structures which play an important role in what regards making up the Olympic Agenda for 2020.

Octavian Morariu was elected member of the IOC in September 2013, becoming the fourth Romanian to be a member of the international Olympic forum.
