White House 'recalibrating strategy' for surgeon general nominee Dr. Murthy's approval

Washington, Tue, 18 Mar 2014 ANI

Washington, March 18 (ANI): The White House has reportedly said that it is recalibrating the strategy to get approval votes for US president Barack Obama's nominee for Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy.

The announcement was made after the National Rifle Association came clear on its decision to not support Murthy, following which Senate Democrats began to withdraw their support.

Meanwhile, White House press secretary Jay Carney said that the administration would try to avoid a repeat on Dr. Vivek Murthy, but insisted they remained committed to Dr. Murthy, the Washington Times reported.

The spokeman said that after the confirmation vote of Debo Adegbile, the White House will recalibrate the strategy around Dr. Murthy's floor vote, adding that he was expected to get confirmed ultimately and be one of the country's most powerful messengers on health and wellness.

An internist and political ally of Obama, Murthy has been facing strong opposition from the National Rifle Association for advocating stringent gun control laws. (ANI)
