Primark to pay another 6m euros in compensation to Rana Plaza victims in Bangladesh (Update: Primar

London, Mon, 17 Mar 2014 ANI

London, March 17 (ANI): Primark will reportedly pay 6 million Euros (10 million dollars) more in compensation to victims of the Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh.

The payment has been announced just weeks before the anniversary of the disaster, which killed more than 1,100 garment workers.

According to the Guardian, the British retailer will pay 9million dollars to the 581 workers, or their families, from New Wave Bottoms, Primark's supplier, which was based on the second floor of the building in Dhaka.

Meanwhile, an additional one million dollars will be given out as communal compensation, to be shared among the 3,600 workers who suffered when the eight-floor Rana Plaza complex collapsed in April last year.

Paul Lister, company secretary of Primark's owner, ABF, said that with the first anniversary of Rana Plaza fast approaching, the company was determined to meet this responsibility to workers in its supply chain.

Lister said that Primark supported the International Labour Organization (ILO) in urging other retailers sourcing from Rana Plaza to donate to the trust fund, so that it can pay out in full to the remaining victims. (ANI)
