Delhi to get 5,000 new women voters

Delhi,Elections 2014, Sat, 08 Mar 2014 IANS

New Delhi, March 8 (IANS) The Election Commission has received about 5,000 new voter enrolment forms after holding a day-long voting awareness campaign for women in the national capital Saturday, said an official.

"The Election Commission received 1,286 forms from northwest district, 1,185 from northeast, 1,098 from southeast and 1,453 from southwest," Chief Nodal Officer Ankur Garg told IANS.

During the campaign, emphasis was laid on areas where low turnout of women has been observed in constituencies during the last assembly elections, he said.

To ensure wider publicity, the workshop and special enrolment programmes were held in more than 200 locations like women colleges, Metro stations, polling stations and gender resource centres.

The Election Commission has also decided to hold special camps across the country Sunday (March 9) to help voters check if their names are included in the electoral rolls.

"We had received complaints that some people with EPIC (Elector Photo Identity Card) in the past have been denied the right to vote because their names were not found in the electoral rolls", said Garg.

The camps will be organised at all polling stations, where booth officers will have the electoral rolls displayed.
