Bhutan King meets Manmohan Singh to enhance bilateral ties

New Delhi, Tue, 07 Jan 2014 ANI

New Delhi, Jan.7 (ANI): Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday in a bid to bolster bilateral relations, as both nations strive to settle major issues, including India's recent decision to withdraw fuel subsidy on supply of kerosene and cooking gas.

India's withdrawal of subsidy on kerosene and cooking gas led to a steep price rise in Bhutan, a step that became a crucial issue during general elections of 2013 in the neighbouring country.

King Wangchuck is visiting India after Bhutan's general elections in 2013. Accompanied by a high-level ministerial delegation and his wife, the royals are on a five-day visit to the country.

India's Foreign Minister Salman Khurshid and Defence Minister A.K.Antony were also present during the meeting.

King Wangchuck is also scheduled to meet Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari.

This is King Wangchuck's second visit in 12 months. He was the also the chief guest at India's Republic Day celebrations last year. (ANI)
