Govt. announces to constitute 7th pay commission ahead of Lok Sabha Election

In a bid to woo the Indian voters especially family members and government jobs sector persons, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government Wednesday announced to constitute the 7th Pay Commission - the commission that recommends the salary, allowance and pension structures of the government employees and ex-employees in parity to inflation.

Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram in this regard today informed to media that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has approved the constitution of the 7th Pay Commission and its recommendations are likely to be implemented with effect from January 1, 2016.

The recommendation of 7th pay commission will benefit to 8-millions of government servants comprising 5-million existing employees and 3-million retired employees of the central government including railways and defence personnels.

The Pay Commission has been set up after the gap of 10-years and as per this formula the recommendations of the 7th pay commission is likely to be implemented from January 01, 2016 as 6th pay commission’s recommendations were implemented from January 01, 2006. However, implementation may take more times the financial benefits are given after a gap of 10 years.

The state governments too have to implement the recommendations by doing some modifications after implementing by the center.

As the Commission takes about two years to prepare its recommendations, the award of the seventh pay panel is likely to be implemented from January 1, 2016, Chidambaram said.

The names of the chairperson and members of the 7th Pay Commission and its terms of reference will be finalised shortly after consultation with major stakeholders, FM said.

With this announcement, government is eyeing to a mass voters as assembly elections in five states are scheduled in November and the general Lok Sabha election in the next year.
