Voter identity cards given to Delhi's homeless

Delhi,State Elections 2013, Wed, 20 Nov 2013 IANS

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) The Election Commission distributed voter identity cards to more than 100 homeless people here so that they can vote in the Dec 4 assembly polls, authorities said Wednesday.

The cards were issued to those living on pavements and roadside areas of Yamuna market in the central district of the national capital, said an official of the Election Commission (EC).

"Today (Wednesday), we have distributed more than 100 voter identity cards to the homeless people living in this area. As soon as the processing of the remaining voter cards gets over, they will be distributed to the remaining homeless voters of the area," said Satinder Singh, a senior official from Election Commission.

"More than 500 homeless people living in the Yamuna market area had filled up the electoral forms during various camps organised," added Singh.

He said the job did not end with just getting the voters enrolled, as they would now have to ensure that they cast their vote as well.

"Beginning with a meagre figure of only 62 such voters on its list a year back, the EC has been able to enroll over 7,000 homeless people in the city so far," said Singh.
