New Delhi, Oct. 10 (ANI): After Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif assured justice in the Mumbai terror attacks of November 26, 2008, earlier this month Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Thursday confirmed the visit of the Pakistani Judicial Commission in the country, and said that they had conducted their cross examination in the case.
"The Judicial Commission from Pakistan visited Mumbai from 23-25 September, 2013 for cross examination and re-examination of the four prosecution witness in India in respect of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack case in Pakistan," Shinde said.
" The proceeding of the Judicial Commission was held in the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Esplanade, Mumbai," he added.
After Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh met with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York last month, where the latter assured action on delivering justice in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks.
National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon on September 29 said that after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took up the issue the 26/11 terror strikes in Mumbai, his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif, assured during their meeting in New York, that Islamabad would take progressive action on the matter.
"Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh of course mentioned terrorism and a need for effective action on bringing the perpetrators of Mumbai attacks to book. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said that indeed that was Pakistan's intention, and now that the judicial commission has just returned to Pakistan after gathering their depositions and evidence in India, there would be further progress of that," Menon told media in New York after the two leaders had met on the sidelines of the 68th United Nations General Assembly session.
The 2008 Mumbai attacks were twelve coordinated shooting and bombing attacks across Mumbai, by members of Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Ajmal Kasab, the only attacker who was captured alive, later confessed upon interrogation that the attacks were conducted with the support of Pakistan's ISI.
The attacks, which drew widespread global condemnation, began on Wednesday, 26 November and lasted until Saturday, 29 November 2008, claiming the lives of 166 people and wounding at least 308.
Eight of the attacks occurred in South Mumbai-at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, the Oberoi Trident, the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, Leopold Cafe, the Cama Hospital (a women and children's hospital), the Nariman House Jewish community centre, the Metro Cinema, a lane behind the Times of India building and St. Xavier's College.
There was also an explosion at Mazagaon, in Mumbai's port area, and in a taxi at Vile Parle.
By the early morning of 28 November, all sites except for the Taj Hotel had been secured by Mumbai Police and security forces.
On 29 November, India's National Security Guards (NSG) conducted Operation Black Tornado to flush out the remaining attackers. It resulted in the deaths of the last remaining attackers at the Taj Hotel and the ending all fighting in the attacks.
Kasab was hanged on 21 November 2012 at 7:30 a.m. and buried at Yerwada Jail in Pune. (ANI)
